Scholar Dr.S.P.Patil’s involvement with Jainology can be comprehended by the fact that he has published a bulk of 45 books of quality work on Jaina Literature, Culture and Translation from Marathi and Hindi. After he did his B.A. at Poona University and M.A. at Shivaji University in Kannada and English, he earned his Ph.D. for his thesis ‘Chavundaraya Purana : Ondu Adhyayana’ from Karnataka University, Dharwad.

Dr.S.P.Patil began his career as a lecturer at College Of Commerce, Shedbal. Later, in 1969, he joined Karnataka University, Dharwad and served in the capacity of Research Assistant (in the Jaina Section), Lecturer (1976) and Reader (1988). At present he is a Professor of Kannada and i/c. Chairman of the Department of Jainology. He is Guest Lecturer for Department of Jainology since 1981-82. He is also the Honorary Director at National Institute Of Prakrit Study And Research, Shravanabelgol. He is the Vice President of Sanmati Sahitya Parishat, Bangalore.

Other creditable positions held by him are – Trustee of Prakrit Jnana Bharati Trust, Bangalore and Shruti Kevali Education Trust, Shravanabelgol; Honorary Editor, ‘SANMATI DESHANA’ Bahubali; Member of the Editorial Committees of ‘LOCHANA’ Quarterly, B.M.Shree Trust, Bangalore and ‘SAMANVAYA’ Quarterly (Marathi), Dharwad and Member of Executive Committee Anekat Shodha Peetha, Bahubali.

Dr.Patil is honoured with numerous awards and recognition for his unstinted contribution to Jaina Literature and Translation of Marathi works. The Kannada Sahitya Parishat , Bangalore awarded him with “Swastishri Devendrakeerti Prashasti” in 1984 and “Swastishri Devendrakeerti Prashasti” in 1988 for his works ‘Siddha Shesha’ and ‘Rastriya Bhavaikya : Jaina Dharma’ respectively. The Karnatak Sangh of Bombay honoured him with “Varadaraj Adya Prashasti” for his contributions towards Kannada, Marathi Bhasha Bandhavya. He was honoured also with “Shri Gomateshwar Prashasti” by Shri Gomateshwar Vidyapeetha, Shravanabelgol and “Acharya Shri Bahubali Muni Sahitya Puraskar” in 1997 by Dakshina Bharat Jaina Sabha, Sangli.

Dr.Patil has adorned numerous Seminars, Conferences, Extension Lecture Camps and Workshops.. He has presented his papers at various seminars held at Mysore, Madras, Gulbarga, Shimoga and Bangalore. He is also given the honour to deliver Annual Special Endowment Lectures at Madras University. He is associated with Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Bangalore; Central Sahitya Academy, New Delhi; Karnataka State Sahitya Academy, Bangalore; Kunda Kunda Bharati, New Delhi and Department of Jainology and Prakrit at the Mysore and Madras Universities.
