A Milestone for Indian Heritage: Bihar Establishes Academies for Prakrit and Pali

The recent decision by the Government of Bihar to establish two dedicated academies for Prakrit and Pali marks a historic moment for scholars, linguists, and Indophiles worldwide. By placing these institutions under the administrative care of the Department of Higher Education, the state has reaffirmed its commitment to preserving and revitalising India’s profound intellectual and spiritual heritage.

This initiative comes at an especially significant time, following the Union Cabinet’s recent decision to accord Classical Language status to both Prakrit and Pali.

Role and Vision of the New Academies

The Prakrit and Pali Academies will function as centres of excellence—dedicated to the preservation of ancient manuscripts, high-quality research, and the translation of classical texts into modern languages. Both academies will be housed within the Bihar Rashtrabhasha Parishad premises in Patna—an institution renowned for its world-class publications, including the complete works of Mahāmahopādhyāya Gopinath Kavirāja and several other landmark Hindi editions.
