A Milestone for Indian Heritage: Bihar Establishes Academies for Prakrit and Pali
This initiative comes at an especially significant time, following the Union Cabinet’s recent decision to accord Classical Language status to both Prakrit and Pali.
For those who value India’s ancient wisdom, this move ensures that the foundational languages of the Jain and Buddhist traditions receive the scholarly attention, research depth, and cultural visibility they truly deserve.
Role and Vision of the New Academies
The Prakrit and Pali Academies will function as centres of excellence—dedicated to the preservation of ancient manuscripts, high-quality research, and the translation of classical texts into modern languages. These initiatives will create a vibrant platform for researchers to explore our shared history, while also helping the public reconnect with their linguistic and cultural roots.
Both academies will be housed within the Bihar Rashtrabhasha Parishad premises in Patna—an institution renowned for its world-class publications, including the complete works of Mahāmahopādhyāya Gopinath Kavirāja and several other landmark Hindi editions.
A Moment of Celebration
This is truly a moment of celebration for Prakrit and Pali enthusiasts everywhere. We look forward to witnessing these academies flourish into globally respected institutions that honour the timeless beauty of our classical heritage.
