"Jainism was essentially a religion based on human brotherhood and equality. A.S. Sarat Chandra Ghoshal, the General Editor of the mounmental service, The Sacred books of the Jainas has remarked : "Jainism is one of the oldest religions, of India whose Votaries in the past ranked from the prince to the peasant, exercising a noble influence in placing al beings on the same sacred status by unfurling banner of peace and universal brotherhood, under which they were called to assemble." Ranjan Surideva, in an on Panchayats in Jain period has rightly remarked. "Sarva Varnah Saman Manarha (i.e. equality of all) is the basic principle of Panchayats in the Jain period "The democratic content in the teaching of Mahavir Tirthankar is clearly borne out by his discourses. In Vyavahar-uddeshak, for example he clearly enjoins the election of his successors by a convened assemble. His Sharmana Sangha, was essentially democratic. The existance of Janapadas and the Great deal of trade carried on by them, as revealed in Jain Canonical Literature is discussed in a very learned and original study by Dr. Motichandra, which describes the various travel methods and trade routes of ancient India."
