The reaction of many people to the granting of the minority status to Jains by the Central
Government is akin to the reaction of this farmer if the expectation is of Jains getting some
extraordinary privilege due to the minority status.
Jains already had minority status. In as many as 13 big states of India including Maharashtra (which has the largest population of Jains in India), Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Delhi, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Assam, Jains already had the minority status. In all probability, for most Jains and non-Jains it didn’t make much of a difference.
